The PVV became the largest party in the Netherlands in the 2023 elections. The PVV is a far-right party that aims to deprive Muslims and people with a non-Western migration background of their human rights. 1 out of 4 Dutch support or tolerate this. The media ignored and thus normalized the political agenda of the PVV. We call for support to human rights organizations fighting for equal treatment and against racism and discrimination.
What's in the PVV party program?
The PVV states in its program that Islamic schools, the Quran, and mosques should be banned. It wants to enshrine in the constitution that Judeo-Christian and humanistic roots form the dominant and leading culture in the Netherlands. The PVV wants to ban the wearing of headscarves in Parliament and government buildings. The PVV wants to keep Black Pete black and also, in a new stance, withdraw apologies for the slavery past and war crimes in former Dutch East Indies.
According to the PVV, the 'Dutch' culture is threatened by admitting people from non-Western, Islamic countries, allowing Syrian terrorists to enter the country. The program also states that non-Western immigrants commit more criminal offenses and that those convicted with dual nationality should be deported.
With these proposals, the PVV aims to deprive Muslims and people with a non-Western migration background of their human rights. These proposals are discriminatory. Xenophobia, hatred towards 'foreign cultural elements,' and nationalism are strongly emphasized in the party program. The PVV thus fits the Dutch official definition of right-wing extremism.
PVV voter supports discrimination or tolerates it
The PVV obtained 37 seats in the 2023 elections. This means that 1 out of 4 Dutch voted for a party that, if in power, would discriminate against Muslims and people with a migration background. Voters knew this: the PVV has held these viewpoints for years and has never hidden them. Voters now supported the discriminatory proposals or tolerated them - the outcome is the same.
Media normalized the PVV
National media mainly focused on the PVV's desire to limit migration to the Netherlands. There was no attention to the discriminatory proposals in the party program leading up to the elections, in the election debates, and in the analyses afterward. The media did not label the PVV as a far-right party, as is done with similar parties abroad. Due to the lack of attention to the far-right proposals, the PVV could present itself as a party that, like others, wanted to limit migration. The media thereby contributed to normalizing the political agenda of PVV.

*In 2023, almost 13 million people were eligible to vote. The turnout was 78%, so about 10 million people cast a vote. 2.3 million people voted for the PVV, meaning 1 out of 4.4 voters supported the PVV. We have rounded that up to 1 out of 4.
